Greenspring Living Room
This elegant great room blends soft white walls, gold-leaf accents, and reupholstered silver-white velvet sofas for a fresh, luxurious look. Tall, golden velvet window draperies compliment the architecture of the room. The black piano, gold-and-black artwork, and mirrored decor add drama. Gold console tables and repurposed pieces complete the space, delighting a grateful client.

These Great Room challenges were less about design elements, and more about collaboration, compromise and completion. The room is gi-normous, with 24” high ceilings, large enough for an entire normal size house to fit into, and extravagant architecture and detail.
A room this large requires the right amount of furnishings, scaled correctly, to make the space liveable, accessible, and real. Our client thought 2 sofas, plus the obligatory cocktail table, was the right amount of furniture, anchored by a small rug that would fit under the front legs of the sofas.
Our client wanted to keep the vanilla color walls within the picture molding. Collaboration: She asked if we could leave the black accent around the arched walls. We painted the walls and trim in our favorite soft white, leaving every bit of the gold leaf in the room. The inherited sofas, though hideous in dark stained vanilla silk, were amazing scale, an intricate, unusual design and super comfortable with enormous down filled bench cushions. We upholstered them in sleek textured silver white velvet. Low, long console tables in a soft gold mirrored finish behind the sofas add space for collectables and lamps. We added silver white chairs with black frames next to window wall to create a real conversation area. Our client didn’t want to “cover” the window wall, but allowed us to add soaring dark golden velvet panels between the windows.
We designed a large custom size area rug in a white and silver/pewter abstract pattern. Moving the black piano into the room was inspired. We added huge inverted golden mirrored disk wall décor and gold and black artwork, all perfectly sized, into the lower squares over the piano. Repurposed a cocktail table and chests and lots and lots of accents. Grateful Client! Completion!
