Are Accent Walls Still Trending? Let’s Talk About It.

Author: Laura Outland

If you’ve ever found yourself wondering, “Are accent walls still a thing?” — you’re not alone. It’s a question I hear a lot as an interior designer. The short answer? It’s complicated. The long answer? Let’s dive in.

Once the darling of early 2000s HGTV makeovers (remember those bold red dining room walls?), accent walls were everywhere. But as design trends evolved, some people started declaring them outdated. We’ve seen a move toward more cohesive, minimal palettes — but does that mean the accent wall is dead?

Not even close.

In my design philosophy, it’s not about what’s “in” or “out” — it’s about what reflects you. Your home should feel like yours, and if a well-executed accent wall helps express your personality, then I say go for it. But let’s do it in a way that feels fresh, intentional, and elevated — not like a half-hearted attempt to avoid committing to color.

So, how do you make an accent wall feel timeless instead of trendy? Here are a few designer-approved tips:

Don’t Just Paint — Add Texture

Paint is a classic go-to, but don’t stop there. If you want your accent wall to feel like a thoughtful design choice (and not an afterthought), try incorporating architectural elements like:

  • Trim molding or paneling
  • Board and batten
  • Slatted wood accents

These add depth and visual interest without screaming for attention. They also work beautifully in everything from modern to traditional spaces.

Embrace Wallpaper

Wallpaper has made a major comeback, and for good reason. A single wall covered in a rich, textured, or patterned wallpaper can completely transform a space. Bonus: because you’re only doing one wall, you can afford to splurge on something a little more luxurious or bold.

Whether it’s a soft grasscloth for a serene bedroom or a dramatic floral in a powder room, wallpaper lets you bring personality and polish into a space effortlessly.

Don’t Forget the 5th Wall

We often overlook the ceiling, but it has the potential to be the most impactful accent wall of all. Whether you paint it a contrasting color, wallpaper it, or add wooden beams or coffers, giving your ceiling a little TLC can add drama, warmth, and cohesion to the room.

Just remember: consult with a designer before going bold overhead — the key is making sure it enhances your space, not overwhelms it.

So… Are Accent Walls Still a Thing?

They absolutely can be — if done with intention. Trends will always come and go, but the heart of good design is creating spaces that feel authentic to you. Accent walls are simply one tool in the toolbox — and when used well, they can elevate a room from basic to breathtaking.

So if you’re on the fence, ask yourself: does it bring joy? Does it reflect who I am? If the answer is yes — let’s make it happen.
